POSITION: Assistant Professor of Graphic Design

DESCRIPTIONAssistant Professor (or higher) of Graphic Design. Teach Graphic Design courses at all levels in an expanding undergraduate degree (BA) program; contribute in area of specialization; advise students. The ideal candidate is well versed in graphic design theory and application, industry standards, and traditional and digital media.

Candidate must be flexible, energetic, and comfortable teaching in a multi-cultural environment. Must enjoy working as an integral part of a growing team of professors. Responsibilities include student advising, departmental/university service and involvement in program development. Should be actively involved in own creative/scholarly activity.

Candidates must have a (terminal) graduate degree in Graphic Design (M.F.A. or above), teaching experience, and a demonstrated record of professional design practice (publications, exhibitions, and/or equivalent professional practice).

VCUQatar: Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar

POSITION: Graphic Design Faculty

VCUQatar is the Qatar campus of the prestigious Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1998 through a partnership with Qatar Foundation, VCUQatar offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion design, graphic design, interior design and painting & printmaking, a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history and a Master of Fine Arts degree in design.

Located in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, VCUQatar is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. VCUQatar was the first campus established in Education City, and has since been joined by Weill Cornell Medical College, Texas A&M University, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Carnegie-Mellon University, Northwestern University, HEC Paris, and University College London.

Qatar is a liberal, hospitable and progressive country in the Arabian Gulf and remains one of the healthiest economies in the Gulf region. English is the standard second language and the population of Qatar is approximately 2.27 million and growing – 350,000 Qatari, the remainder expatriates. Doha offers all the conveniences found in a contemporary and cosmopolitan city, and also maintains a traditional Arab flavor, evident in the old markets and the city’s Islamic Arab architecture. The Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I.M.Pei opened in November 2008 and the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf) opened in 2010. The Graphic Design Department has 9 faculty who are active researchers and practice collaborative teaching in many courses. They are from prestigious Universities in the USA and UK. Yale University, 2 faculty from VCU, 3 faculty from RISD, MICA, Middlesex University, NC State. All faculty have terminal degrees and are active researchers while being current, thoughtful and collaborative.

VCUQatar’s Graphic Design department is recruiting for a faculty member with expertise and strength in Arabic Type design, macro and micro principles and aesthetics of bilingual typography and experimental design in multilingual typographic expressions. The candidate has to possess a thorough knowledge on the history of visual communication in the region and globally. The department seeks a faculty member whose teaching practice is rooted in contemporary design practice in the pragmatic realm, but whose thinking is futuristic. Additionally candidates should show their approach and practical experience engaging students in the following arenas using innovative media and technologies: creative storytelling, branding for multimedia branding, presentation design, interactive installations, and information design. Candidates must have advanced knowledge and ability using technology to support teaching and research.


  • Master’s degree in arts/fine arts or terminal degree in graphic design or a closely related field, and a minimum of two years of teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated teaching, research and industry experience.
  • Must have advanced knowledge and ability using technology to support teaching and research.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU and VCUQatar.
  • Established record of accomplishments in research or professional work in area of specialization is strongly preferred.
